What are UCL/Open City Doc’s Short Courses?
The short courses are courses run but UCL’s department of Public Anthropology and Open City Documentary Festival. Covering areas including; filmmaking, anthropology, visual-audio media, archive and activism, with a focus on personal and professional development. They mostly run during evenings and weekends. They sometimes run in person at UCL East, Stratford, but mostly run online, making them accessible to those living outside of the UK.
How short are the Short Courses?
They are courses varying in length, usually running weekly from 1-10 weeks. They can last a full day (10-5) or just for a session (1.5-2.5 hours).
What is Public Anthropology?
Public Anthropology brings together researchers from within and outside the academic world to explore what kind of research and insight arises when the boundaries between a university and its surrounding social world are broken down.
At present, there are six graduate programs based in Public Anthropology: Audio Storytelling for Radio and Podcast MA, Creative Documentary by Practice MFA, Creative and Collaborative Enterprise MA, Designing Audio Experiences: Art, Science and Production MA, Ethnographic and Documentary Film (Practical) MA & Immersive Factual Storytelling MA.
Where do the Public Anthropology Short Courses take place?
The PA short courses take place either online (sometimes referred to as online distance learning) or in-person, at our UCL East campus. For online courses, you take take part from anywhere in the world as long as you have access to a computer/laptop/tablet, and you are take into account the UK time zone.

How much do Short Courses cost?
Each course price is different and varies depending on the length/intensity. Each course will have the course costs outlined on the page.
Does UCL offer discounts/bursaries?
Yes. Every course offers a General Rate, Student/Concession Rate, and UCL Students Rate. We also offer a limited number of bursary places. Please see our Terms & Conditions for more information.
Who are UCL Public Anthropology Short Courses for?
Our short courses are open to those interested in anthropology, filmmaking, audio visual practices, and those interested in gaining technical, theoretical or practical skills. Each course varies in what it offers. The learning outcomes will often be explained on the course page. Some are more practical, offering hands-on, technical skills, and some are more focused on developing an understanding of theoretical ideas. Our courses do not offer academic accreditation, and do not carry academic weight, but they are useful for personal and professional development.
Is there an age restriction?
The majority of our in-person courses are 18+, (aside from some specific courses such as SPECTRA). The Summer Film School is strictly 18+. The Online courses are open to all ages.
Are sessions recorded?
Some of our courses are recorded, this is up to the digression of the course tutor. Please check the course page for info. Unfortunately, sessions part of the 10-week Documentary Filmmaking Online course with Catalin Brylla will not be recorded, as these sessions are in very high demand and involve bespoke content, and we do not wish for this content to be shared or freely available.
Will I receive a letter of completion?
Yes, if you wish for a letter demonstrating you have completed the course, please email shortcourses@opencity.ucl.ac.uk
Do the these short courses provide me with academic credits?
No, the short courses do not translate into academic credits, and they are strictly extra-curricular, for personal and professional development.
Can I pay for a short course in instalments?
Unfortunately, our payment system means that we cannot accept payment for courses in instalments. Our short courses often run several times a year, so we hope this provides options for those who wish to plan and take a short course. If you wish to reserve a place on a future course, please send us an email to shortcourses@opencity.ucl.ac.uk and a member of our team will be happy to discuss this with you.
Does UCL provide accommodation for in-person courses?
UCL does not provide accommodation for short courses. It is down to the students to organise their own accommodation. The University of London does have a service for short and summer stays, which you may be qualified for. Please check their website for more information and get in contact with them to check your eligibility.
What is the time commitment for the course?
Each course will state how many hours or sessions it will run for, so please check the specific course page for details. Most of our courses contain extra readings, research, films and resources you can engage with; but most of the time this is not compulsory and students can engage with as little or as much as they like.
