Expanded Realities showcases storytelling at the intersection of art and technology. This year’s collection includes interactive web documentaries, 360 films and virtual reality experiences.
The exhibition is free to attend to the general public and will operate an on-site reservation system. You will be able to book individual time slots for interactive projects when you arrive at the Festival Hub, while our 360 cinema will offer time slots where you can select a number of experiences. Expanded Realities is located at the Festival Hub at China Exchange, and registration will only be available in person at the Festival Hub.

Explore the world’s first VR museum dedicated to celebrating artefacts, artwork and stories of LGBTQ+ people. Discover the touching stories behind fifteen 3D-scanned personal objects – from wedding shoes to a marble statue – contributed by the queer community. History often excludes marginalised voices: this exhibition demonstrates how VR can disrupt this.

“Bystanding: The Feingold Syndrome” is an immersive-interactive VR docufiction exploring the drowning and rescue of Israeli rowing-champion Jasmine FeingoldFinegold. In 2009, Feingold lost consciousness and capsized while rowing in a Tel Aviv River. During those five minutes, none of the passersby took action to help her, until finally, one person did.

Our 360 Cinema selection will screen a selection of immersive films that explore our connection to the earth, safe-spaces for subcultures, familial memories, and rapid urbanisation.

“Replacements” depicts a Javanese family routinely observing their neighborhood day after day, generation after generation, replacement after replacement. it is a VR story about roots, time and change.

“These walls have seen my life.” A loving ode to the house of creator Diego Kompel’s grandparents, this short documentary offers us a warm look back on the flows of family life over time and generations. The Inhabited House is a wistful meditation on the textures of the familiar, and the way the interconnection of relationships are the threads that make a life. By delving into the archive of home videos, the project recalls the tradition of older technologies like film reels and slide projectors in sharing and handing down family legacies.
Our interactive installation pieces tell stories in non-traditional formats. This includes two interactive web-docs that travel across space, time, place and memory.
