Screaming Across a Century: Reinvigorating Archival Filmmaking
How do we solve the stubborn, maddening puzzle of historical memory? How to image it, how to communicate across and through it, how to remain true to it and also transcend it, how to make it alive and potent. Archival materials contain within them the possibility of ‘translating’ across time, not just telling new ‘stories’, but also allowing for different kinds of looking and listening. In working with archival material, we are reckoning with the process by which archival objects themselves bear witness to the stories they tell—how these materials, reexamined in new contexts, can reveal unexpected truths. This session will be presented by filmmaker Sierra Pettengill.
