The Ian White Lecture: Jordan Lord

Sun 19 Apr, 2:00PM

ā€œFilm festivals can be lonely places, the auditorium also prescribing isolation. My hotel room, its satellite TV, becomes both a friend and the site of private communication, between oneself and oneself, between oneself and the memory of a world. Events unravelling on the English-language news channels are conversations that I am carrying with me during the day, from the television into the auditorium in increasingly bizarre correspondence, like a growing community.ā€ (Ian White,Ā ā€œPalace Calls Crisis Summit,ā€Ā 2003)

In this performative lecture, Jordan Lord will show a version of their new short filmĀ Concealed and Denied, an archival film without archival footage that concerns how right-wing propagandaĀ weaponisesĀ mainstream media as well asĀ documentary film and its funding structures. News that has unfolded since editing the film will interrupt it, as Lord reflects on the liveness of cinema and media access; how a film fundamentally changes based on when, how, and to whom it is a shown; or the porosity between the cinema, the audience, and the news that surrounds them.

The film is openĀ captionedĀ and audio described in English. The lecture will be liveĀ captionedĀ and audio described in English. The presentation will also be interpreted in BSL.

Jordan Lord is a filmmaker, writer, and artist whose work addresses the relationships between historical and emotional debts; framing and support; access, disability, and documentary. Their films have been shown at festivals and venues including New York Film Festival, MoMA Doc Fortnight, Walker Art Center, Union Docs, and Dokufest. Lord first came into contact with Ian White’s work through a study group at Artists Space in 2013, and White’s work has since directly informed their performances, films, teaching, and programing. Lord has presented solo exhibitions at Piper Keys, Artists Space, and Squeaky Wheel; their solo exhibition “Narrative Warfare” will be on view at LUX from 11 April – 31 May.

The Ian White Lecture is presented in partnership with LUX and the Ian White Estate.Ā This ongoing series celebrates the provocative and enquiring spirit of artist, performer, curator,Ā educatorĀ and writer Ian White (1971–2013). The invitation to write and present a new lecture is extended to an individual whose work shares and carries forward this spirit.
