All Other Things Equal + There Are Not Thirty-Six Ways of Showing a Man Getting on a Horse

All Other Things Equal
Anya Tsyrlina | 2020 | Switzerland, Russian Federation | 19’ | digital

A found footage documentary in which material taken from late-Soviet propaganda films about gender equality is reconstructed to imagine a world populated entirely by women. The film depicts women performing an increasingly broad range of roles from the mundane to the extraordinary. Farmers, telecommunications experts, cosmonauts and biological scientists all appear in Tsyrlina’s elliptical montage.

There Are Not Thirty-Six Ways of Showing a Man Getting on a Horse
No existen treinta y seis maneras de mostrar cómo un hombre se sube a un caballo
Nicolás Zukerfeld | 2020 | Argentina | 63’ | digital

There Are Not Thirty-Six Ways of Showing a Man Getting on a Horse is an idiosyncratic investigation into a curious quote on the nature of cinema, attributed to the great Hollywood auteur Raoul Walsh – beginning with an extended montage of moments from Walsh’s vast oeuvre in which the director’s leading men mount horses, or walk into rooms, over and over in rhythmic repetition. In the second chapter, a professor – heard in voice-over – describes his obsessive search for the origins of this obscure quotation. Illustrated with scribbled clues and scanned archival evidence unearthed during his laborious research, There Are Not Thirty-Six Ways of Showing a Man Getting on a Horse is a distinctive work of filmmaking-as-criticism.
