OPEN CITY DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL 2018 – VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for enthusiastic and proactive volunteers to join us for the eighth edition of Open City Documentary Festival, which will take place from Tuesday 4th – Sunday 9th  September 2018 at venues across Central London.

Volunteering for a film festival is a great way of meeting film industry professionals and gaining experience in a variety of areas, from event production to technical and hospitality. Whether you love documentary, want to get some experience working on a film festival or would like to meet some interesting people, then make sure to register your interest via the form on our website here

OPEN CITY DOCS SCHOOL – OPEN CITY DOCS SCHOOL MANAGER

Contract: Full Time

Fee: £30,000 per annum

Start Date: Mid-September 2018 (flexible if notice period is required)

Based in the Open City Docs School office at UCL.

Open City Docs School is recruiting a School Manager to oversee the organisation and development of their documentary training projects including Open City Docs School courses, courses run for UCL as well as supporting MA and MFA students with distributing their work and building links to the industry after graduation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for organisation and development of Open City Docs School training courses, working within the larger umbrella of Open City Docs. 
  • Coordinate Open City Docs School CPD courses 
    • Source tutors and ensure they are correctly briefed and supported
    • Develop structure of courses and ensure the standard of courses is upheld
    • Handle bookings from students and enquiries for courses
    • Communication with participants on courses
    • Work with technical manager to ensure equipment is available for all courses
    • Develop new courses to continue development of Open City Docs School
    • Work to financial targets for income on CPD courses
  • Coordinate courses run for UCL by Open City Docs 
    • Source tutors and ensure they are correctly briefed and supported
    • Handle external bookings for UCL courses
    • Manage registrations, administration and budgeting for courses 
  • Manage administration and budgeting for all Open City Docs school activities including projected budgets, book-keeping and regularly reporting on income and expenditure.  You will work with Sage Online Business Accounting software.
  • Contribute to development of support programme offered to MFA students including arranging internships, connecting students with industry and arranging visits to international festivals – you may be asked to accompany (at our expense) students on one such trip each year 
  • Handle distribution of student graduate projects from MA and MFA course including submitting to festivals, arranging screenings and assisting with promotional materials. 
  • Work with Marketing Manager to promote the courses, providing copy and images where required as well as advising on target audiences.
  • Assist with general office administration where necessary. 
  • Fundraising for educational projects and activities to grant foundations, private patrons and corporate sponsors
  • Contribute to educational projects as part of the annual Open City Documentary Festival to make the festival accessible to students and younger audiences. 
  • Manage any assistants, paid or volunteers, and intern(s) as required per project
  • Participate in team meetings and overall strategy for Open City Docs and its associated projects

Person Specification – Minimum Requirements

  • Significant, demonstrable previous experience working in a similar environment or role managing a wide range of processes in film education
  • Demonstrable skills in course management, office procedures and supervision of assistant staff
  • Exceptional IT skills and ability to manage databases and systems
  • Experience of managing a budget, reconciling costs and financial reporting and proven ability to operate bookkeeping software
  • Experience of effectively negotiating with colleagues and partners on costs and in-kind resources
  • Interest in international documentary film culture and detailed knowledge of the UK industry and points of entry
  • Ability to keep calm while busy and working in a high-pressure environment
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and to manage and meet deadlines
  • A proactive approach to solving problems and remaining customer focused 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to liaise effectively with other persons and with external clients/partners and service providers
  • A proven track record of working as a supportive team member
  • The ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with Open City Docs colleagues, partners and stakeholders
  • Ability to work flexible hours, some evenings and weekends
  • A demonstrable commitment to the principles of diversity and inclusion and its practical application and integration in the work environment
