Guangzhou-based artist, filmmaker and publisher Qin Dao will present On Kino, a self-initiated film theatre and moving image archive all maintained in his own living room. Taking a media archaeology approach towards rare, obsolete and lost films on 8mm, 8.75mm, 16mm, 35mm and VHS, On Kino reimagines the afterlives of such marginal cinema through his unique form of collection, archiving and exhibition. Qin Dao will be in conversation with Bo Wang to discuss numerous topics related to On Kino’s work, including socialist film projectors, the history and politics of film exhibitions in China, orphan film prints, and the practice of producing woodcut and screen-printed posters for movies that might or might not exist.
The presentation and talk will be followed by a participatory discussion with the audience on the politics of rediscovery and alternate, non-institutional modes of archiving and exhibiting moving image histories.
The event will be conducted in Mandarin and English. There will be a chance to see and buy some of Qin Dao’s woodcut-printed posters and publications.
Presented in collaboration with Sine Screen.
