Organising a Film Tour

In this workshop we will consider the practicalities and possibilities of self-organising independent film tours of community spaces, meeting halls and cinemas.

This will cover approaching venues, promoting screenings, inviting guest speakers, fundraising, community building and what happens after the event. Lucy Parker and Ed Webb-Ingall will facilitate this event based on their experiences touring Solidarity (2019) and We Have Rather Been Invaded (2018). At the end of the session we hope to co-create a resource to support future film tours.

Speakers:

Lucy Parker is a filmmaker and educator. She was the recipient of the IDFA First Appearance prize in 2019 for her film Solidarity which premiered at Sheffield Doc Fest and in London at Open City. Solidarity is about the experiences of workers in the UK who were blacklisted alongside women who were tricked into intimate relationships with undercover police. She is currently participating in IDFA Project Space 2021 developing a film about the current Undercover Policing Inquiry.  Her films are distributed by LUX, London.

Ed Webb-Ingall is a filmmaker and researcher working with archival materials and methodologies drawn from community video. He collaborates with groups to explore under-represented historical moments and their relationship to contemporary life, developing modes of self-representation specific to the subject or the experiences of the participants.

Paul Sng is a British Chinese filmmaker and writer based in Edinburgh, Scotland, whose films are driven by methodical research, creative storytelling and a collaborative approach that strives for inclusivity and diversity in people and projects. In 2015, Paul founded Velvet Joy Productions to explore the lives and work of individuals who have been neglected, marginalised or misrepresented in the arts and media. Paul’s documentaries have been broadcast on national television and screened internationally and include Sleaford Mods – Invisible Britain (2015), Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle (2017), Social Housing, Social Cleansing (2018) and Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché (2021).
