A Radical Empathy: Esery Mondesir’s Haitian Trilogy + Q&A
In this moving triptych Esery Mondesir collaborates with fellow members of the Haitian diaspora to bear intimate witness to their lives. Shot digitally, Una Sola Sangre (2018) interweaves observation with testimony to create a rich portrait of the Galde family in Cuba, who negotiate their Haitian identity in various ways. Pariah, My Brother, I Follow You, Show Me the Route to the Springs (2020) and What Happens to a Dream Deferred? (2020), captured digitally then transferred to granular 35mm, present an immersive experience of Haitians in Tijuana, Mexico. Having arduously followed “The Route” through South and Central America they build community while hoping to enter the USA, whose president thinks Haiti is a “shithole” country and that all Haitians have AIDS.
