Voices of the Sea + Q&A

Director Kim Hopkins, Country UK, USA, Duration 99,

An emotionally charged film exploring the irreconcilable choices faced by the residents of a remote Cuban fishing village. Mother of four Mariela is tempted to follow her brother to Miami in their pursuit of wealth and freedom. Already a treacherous crossing, the US Coast Guard patrol the waters returning migrants to certain punishment. What’s more, her older husband, Pita would rather endure the tough conditions to stay in a community and a profession that he loves. Voices of the Sea is a beautifully shot and surprisingly frank portrait of the people that Cuban socialism was supposed to protect.
